Apollo 11
Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin flew on the Apollo 11 space craft from July 16-24, 1969. Apollo 11 and its crew are probably the best known objects in American space history. Millions watched as Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon on July 21 with these famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." The astronauts placed the US flag as well as the Early Apollo Scientific Experiment Package (EASEP) on the moon as they took the first steps on the lunar surface. Two and a half hours after landing, Edwin Aldrin sent the following broadcast; "This is the LM pilot. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his or her own way." He then took communion privately. While on the moon; the EASEP was released, pictures were taken of the rim of Little West Crater, two core tubes were collected, and many rock and dust samples were taken.
